Sue Fox has lived in Transylvania County for sixteen years. A native of Candler, NC, Sue graduated from Enka High School. She received her BS in Education and MAEd in School Counseling from Western Carolina University. Sue worked as a teacher and counselor in Haywood County Schools, Director of Financial Aid at Haywood Community College, and served from 1997 to 2007 as Counselor at Rosman Elementary, Rosman Middle, T. C. Henderson Elementary, and Rosman High School. Sue is currently retired and involved in many community and church activities.
Sue and former Rosman High School head football coach, Jim Fox, long envisioned working together in the Transylvania County school system to help kids develop and grow in all areas of academics, athletics and extracurricular activities. Their focus, as a team, was to support and encourage all students in all areas and help them grow and mature into productive and successful citizens of Transylvania County.
Reflecting on her goals and objectives for TCS, Sue states that Transylvania County has historically been an excellent school system, focusing on meeting the needs of all children. In support of this tradition of excellence, Sue believes in:
- Retaining highly qualified teachers;
- Promoting community and parental involvement;
- Fostering better communication among students, parents, teachers and administrators;
- Continuing character education and drug prevention programs;
- Improving the dropout rate;
- Addressing important budget and financial issues and ensuring wise use of school funds; and
- Stressing the importance of academics, athletics and extracurricular activities to help each student develop to his/her highest potential.
Sue and Coach Fox have two children. Their son, Eddie, a 1984 graduate of Rosman High School, is a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps. Eddie recently completed the second of two tours of duty in Iraq among other overseas deployments. Daughter Kelly is the Director of Marketing at Mall of Georgia in Buford, GA. Sue and Jim have two granddaughters, Phebe and DeAnna.

Chris Whitmire grew up in Transylvania County and attended Rosman High School where he participated in multiple athletic, academic, and vocational extracurricular activities and graduated as Valedictorian of his 1986 class. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the United States Air Force Academy in 1990 and graduated with highest honors. He subsequently attended Columbia University as a Guggenheim Scholar and received a Masters of Science in Structural Engineering in 1991. Upon graduation, Chris served on active duty in the United States Air Force as a pilot for 10½ years. He then transitioned to the reserves to continue his military service teaching homeland security at the masters level while flying as a pilot for American Airlines.
Today, Chris is a real estate broker and continues to fly commercially as a pilot and serve the nation as a reservist. He and his wife Shannon live on a family farm in the Cherryfield section with their three young children who attend Transylvania County Schools. Chris was elected to the Board of Education in 2006 and takes great pride in the county’s school system. He credits it for much of his success in an extremely competitive environment. He values accountability, self-discipline, and personal responsibility and sees school as an essential enabler for all to improve their lot in life.
“We must enable our children with the best educational opportunities possible and motivate them to achieve.” Chris’ vision to make an excellent school system even greater is to advance the following objectives:
- Internalize excellence in students beginning with kindergarten and continuing through graduation with an emphasis on achievement and application beyond high school so that more graduates go on to college and/or career specific training
- Make “limited-availability” and capstone courses more accessible to all high school students
- Recruit and retain motivated and talented teachers, administrators, and support personnel to continue the system’s tradition of excellence
- Continue to increase the impact of the school resource officer (SRO) program
- Provide more age appropriate and pertinent drug awareness and character development education
- Educate students and parents about the importance of proper nutrition and exercise which leads to long term healthy lifestyle choices
- Improve writing skills
- Continue to monitor and improve the drop-out rate

Shelia McBee Norman was elected to the Board of Education in 2008, having previously served a two-year appointment from 2004-2006. Her vision as a board member is to network with local, state and national agencies to create programs and environments that will better educate parents and children to the requirements of 21st Century education by helping to increase understanding of educational terminology, laws, and the rights of parents. Her goals are to increase parent involvement, increase graduation rates, and reduce dropout rates. In 2009, Shelia was appointed to the Board of Directors of the North Carolina School Boards Association (NCSBA), where she serves as an advocate for the region and state on issues and concerns facing public education.
Shelia works with a broad scope of community , civic and educational organizations. Some of her roles (past and present) include:

Shelia graduated high school with a license in cosmetology and has received advanced certifications and degrees in the field of cosmetology, including her teaching certification from Clemson University. She has enjoyed a successful career as an award-winning cosmetologist for over 32 years. For the last 25 years, she was the owner and manager of the Mixed Company Salon in Brevard, and currently may be found at Brevard Spa and Salon. She and her husband, Jay, have two daughters, Savannah and Ashley. Shelia loves travel, sports, and quiet family days.

Cindy Petit is a life-long resident of Transylvania County and a graduate of Transylvania County Schools. She earned as business degree through Brevard College and also attended UNC-Asheville and Blue Ridge Community College.
It is her goal as a member of the Board to "see our school system grow and meet the needs of all children. " She wants to assure every child an equal chance to become what they desire to become. She is particularly eager that Transylvania County Schools be able to retain qualified teachers, provide services to all children, and utilize funds in the ways that will most effectively benefit students.
Mrs. Petit operates Quebec Flowers. She and her husband Eric have two children enrolled in Transylvania County Schools.

Tawny McCoy has lived in Transylvania County all her life and graduated from Rosman High School. She holds a college associates degree. She has volunteered in schools throughout her son's school years and decided she wanted to become more involved by "being a part of making the future bright for our students." Her vision is "to insure that each student receives a quality education in a safe environment and that they are prepared to meet the challenges facing them as tomorrow's leaders."
Among Mrs. McCoy's goals is to identify students who need academic coaching as early in the school year as possible and provide coaching throughout the year. She also wants to see the Board continue its age-appropriate drug awareness and violence prevention curriculum as well as character development at all grade levels. She is a strong believer in the value of communication among all stakeholders in the education of Transylvania County students.
Mrs. McCoy and her husband Keith have one son who is in high school.
