Professional Development
Introduction

Transylvania County Schools believes that an ongoing program of focused, relevant professional development represents one important cornerstone of effective professional practice.  Notwithstanding the specific requirements associated with license renewal, a quality professional development program not only supports the further development of existing knowledge and skills, but also supports the acquisition of new skills and strategies to improve professional performance and effectiveness.  This section of the Transylvania County Schools website is designed to connect you with the resources you need to make the most of your professional development experiences.  Please contact our office or your school's principal with any questions you may have as you begin to explore the options and professional development resources available to you as an employee of Transylvania County Schools.

NCLB and "High Quality" Professional Development

The exact nature and role of NCLB's annual "high quality" professional development requirement within the broader general context of professional development is a source of frequent confusion and common misunderstanding.  Notwithstanding the specific license renewal requirements adopted by the State Board of Education, NCLB requires that all teachers of core academic subject areas complete at least one "high quality" professional development activity each year.  Since not all professional development is "high quality" by definition, what does it mean to call an activity "high quality" in the first place?  To answer that question, the Office of Human Resources has prepared a document that clarifies the exact meaning of the phrase as it relates to professional development in the NCLB era.  Download a copy today to learn more!

Requesting CEU Credit!
Effective November 2013, we use the Electronic Registrar Online program by eSchool Solutions to manage our professional development. Please use the ERO system to sign up for workshops and training offered through TCS or to request CEU credit from outside workshops (from providers like NCDPI, WRESA, and so on). Please check with your school's professional development contact with any questions or contact the human resources office.
