During the Monday, February 21, 2022, Regular Meeting, the Transylvania County Board of Education approved a calendar for the 2022-2023 school year. The calendar was created and discussed by a committee including teachers and staff from all schools and district administration.
North Carolina school districts must adhere to the state's calendar laws when selecting the first and last days of the school year. However, counties such as Transylvania that typically experience weather-related closures may apply for a calendar waiver to start the school year earlier than the legislature prescribes. A recent spate of mild winters (except for this year) resulted in our system not meeting the required threshold for a waiver in 2022-2023. This means that the first pupil day for the 2022-2023 school year may not take place before the Monday closest to August 26, 2022, and the last pupil day must occur by June 11, 2023.
Dates to note:
- The first day of school is August 29, 2022.
- The calendar has five Remote Learning Days scheduled.
- The calendar has built-in workdays to support Pre-K thru 5th Grade teachers, who are required by the state to complete LETRS Training.
- For students, Winter Break will begin on Tuesday, December 20, 2022, with an early dismissal day.
- First semester exams will be administered after Winter Break.
- For students, Spring Break will be Monday, April 10 - Friday, April 14, 2023.
- Friday, June 9, 2023, will be the last day of classes and be an early dismissal day.
