Elementary Information

When Transylvania County Schools need to call a "Virtual Day", take out your Blizzard Bag. The Blizzard Bag is an alternative to having to make up missed days, take away workdays, Spring Break, or extending the school year. The bags went home with your child after the holiday break and contain directions on how to complete the work.

The bag contains materials to continue learning on the day we are unable to hold regular school. The contents of the bag are intended to take approximately 4 hours to complete. This bag contains a variety of activities to cover multiple subject areas. Upon returning to school, bring the contents for the day or days. If we are unable to attend school on one day, students would complete the activities for Day 1. If we must be out a second day, complete Day 2 activities. If we are unable to attend school for three days the blizzard bag contents would be completely finished. In the day school resumes the completed work should be turned into the classroom teacher. If for some reason, the work could not be completed on the day out, it must be completed within five days and returned to the teacher in order to receive credit. If the Blizzard Bag assignments are not completed and turned in, then the student will be counted absent for the day.

Middle and High School Information

In the event of inclement weather,Transylvania County Schools will issue a Virtual Day. This is great news as it will allow learning to continue, while also limiting the number of days we have to make up on Saturday, spring break, etc. Since all TCS middle and high school students have been issued a Chromebook, many middle and high school teachers will deliver their virtual day plans digitally. We also have made accommodations for students without wi-fi at home.

The links provided above will provide further information regarding Virtual Days and how students can complete assignments.

Why a Virtual Day?

Dear Transylvania County Parents:

Colder weather is here, and winter is well underway. The falling temperatures also remind us that road conditions can change quickly in Transylvania County. When roads are unsafe, schools can't operate as usual. Early releases, late starts, and cancellations all disrupt the learning process. A day missed for bad weather means one more day added to the calendar somewhere.

Previously, make-up time was scheduled on Saturdays, holidays and breaks, or by extending the school year. Now, Virtual Days help us protect the calendar and stay on schedule while school buildings are closed. For the first time, Transylvania County Schools will use VIRTUAL DAYS to keep students and the calendar from going off target when bad weather closes schools. Every Virtual Day spent working for a while at home means one more day we won't make up, one more day that won't be added to the calendar.

How does it work?

Wherever students go, they use technology more and more. Thanks to great teachers and smart technology, we're ready to serve students at every level when the weather turns bad.

Middle and high school students will partner with teachers through their Chromebooks. Elementary students have "Blizzard Bags&" filled with smart, engaging activities to help them continue their daily work. Every student can keep learning when school is closed, thanks to meaningful work sent home in advance.

We offer the highest-quality educational options for Transylvania County students, and we welcome you to this exciting new opportunity. Our mission is to prepare Transylvania County's students for success in an ever-changing world. As we prepare our nation's next leaders, technology offers some exciting possibilities for our students to get ahead and stay ahead. Learning isn't confined to classrooms, and our great teachers now offer even more options to serve students better than ever.
