Transylvania County has a population of approximately 33,000 people and serves over 3,200 students in nine K-12 schools spread throughout the County.  These schools represent the future and pride of Transylvania County.  The area’s hallmarks include a notable combination of businesses, amenities and other opportunities that allow its citizens to enjoy a high quality of life with the peace and natural wonder that only this region can provide.  Additionally, Brevard College and the Brevard Music Center with its summer Brevard Music Festival are located in Transylvania County.  Transylvania County has a growing summer and winter tourism industry in Appalachia.

Located in the Appalachian Mountain range about thirty minutes southwest of Asheville.  Transylvania County is rural and mountainous.  The county's northern border follows the ridge line proximate to the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the southern border mostly follows the Eastern Continental Divide.  Transylvania County is well-known for its immense natural beauty and unique mountain heritage and is known as the "Land of Waterfalls", due to it having over 250 waterfalls.  Activities include hiking, fly fishing, mountain biking, golfing, rafting, tubing, rock climbing, art galleries, theater, to name a few of the numerous activities you can participate in throughout the year.  Transylvania County is a multi-layered, diverse community: in addition to prosperous urban areas, advanced academics, and a thriving retirement community, the County also has a number of seasonal residents with a prominent percentage of people living below the poverty level.  We combine an appreciation for opportunities for growth with our pride in mountain heritage and traditions.

The Transylvania County Schools are governed by an elected five-member board.  Of the nine schools in our district, six have met or exceeded growth goals for the 2022 school year.  Transylvania County Schools exceed the state average performance on the ACT, ACT WorkKeys, and Advanced Placement exams.  Additionally, Transylvania County Schools exceeds grade level proficiency rates for the State of North Carolina in reading, with 51% of all third to eighth grade students achieving grade level proficiency in 2021-2022.  Even where there is room for improvement, our schools manage to remain near the State average for proficiency.

Our schools are staffed by dedicated employees with 91.4% of our teachers being experienced.  The average class size for each grade is 20 students or less.  Transylvania County Schools has exceeded the State Pre-K enrollment goal with 91% of pre-kindergarten age children attending school.  We also exceed the State 4-year graduation rate with more than 95% of students graduating within four years.
