School Re-Opening Guidance — Lighting Our Way Forward

In the days following Governor Cooper's announcement about re-opening schools in North Carolina, we have received many questions about how schools will ensure the health and safety of students and teachers. We hope that seeing the health and safety requirements directly from DHHS might help inform our community of all the health and safety procedures schools will be taking across our state, and here in Transylvania County Schools.

In addition to the StrongSchoolsNC Toolkit here (which lists the specific requirements that schools need to implement), DHHS has also developed very specific protocols for what school staff need to do if an individual is symptom-positive or has contracted COVID-19. These links contain both of those documents (in English and Spanish), as well as a document of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).

Along with these documents, we want to share the NC Department of Public Instruction's guidebook on re-opening our schools — “Lighting Our Way Forward,” which is a living document being kept constantly up to date on the DPI website. Download and read the 13-page summary document, or the complete 141-page guidebook, also available through the DPI website above.

The Transylvania County Board of Education will hold a regular business meeting on Monday, July 20, 2020 at 6:30 p.m. The board will adhere to the new remote meetings statute from the General Assembly and the Governor’s guidelines for public gatherings. Therefore, for all remote meetings public access will not be permitted at this time.

The meeting will be conducted electronically and may be live-streamed via the Transylvania County Schools Facebook page, open to the public with no membership required (
