Battle of the Books

Elementary Battle Of The Books, Spring 2015

BOBPIC battle of the books spring 2015On March 25, Transylvania County elementary students gathered in the Transylvania County Library Rogow Room for the 2015 Elementary Battle of the Books Tournament.

Throughout the school year third, fourth and fifth grade students have been reading books and learning facts and details to prepare for the event.

This year Pisgah Forest Elementary beat Rosman Elementary, and Brevard Elementary beat T. C. Henderson during the first round of competition. Pisgah Forest Elementary and Brevard Elementary went on to compete for the championship.

After a tense battle, Brevard Elementary won and is this year's county champions.

Battle of the Books is a statewide program that promotes reading. Schools are given a list of books and then form teams to read all of the books in the list.

Each team then goes against other schools in a competition to see which team knows the most about the books. During this school year, students stayed after school to practice with their coaches to learn details from eight books.

This year's list of books selected at the state level for elementary grades included: Extra Credit by Andrew Clements; Hatchet by Gary Paulsen; How Tia Lola Came to Visit Stay by Julia Alvarez; Rules by Cynthia Lord;Soft Rain by Cornelia Cornelissen; A Strong Right Arm-the Story of Mamie "Peanut' Johnson by Michelle Green; I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic, 1912 by Lauren Tarshis; and The Penderwicks-A Summer Tale of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy by Jeanne Birdsall.

BMS at Battle Of The Books, Regionals 2014-15

BMS BOB 2015The Brevard Middle School Battle of the Books team had an impressive showing at Regionals on April 22nd. Out of eleven teams representing WNC counties, BMS came in fourth overall.

These students work diligently all year to read 27 books from a pre-selected list of young adult books from multiple genres. This year's list included high-interest books like The Maze Runner by James Dashner andHero by Mike Lupica, historical fiction like The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare, and it was rounded out with four nonfiction titles including Chasing Lincoln's Killer by James L. Swanson.

At the Regional Competition, the BMS team went up against each of the other schools for a round of 12 questions. Rounds are intense and competition is fierce; students must answer with the complete title and author to earn points.

The philosophy of the NC Battle of the Books program is to encourage reading and expose students to "quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints by prominent authors.'

By participating, "Students improve reading skills, mature in their choices of reading materials, and acquire a broader knowledge base.' Learn more about the program and see next year's reading list by
