Twelve Free "NC Pre-K" Seats Now Available For Transylvania County Schools Pre-Kindergarten

Movement and science fun in pre-kindergarten, Transylvania County Schools Transylvania County Schools is pleased to announce 12 NC Pre-K seats have become available for four-year-olds in pre-kindergarten programs at Rosman Elementary and T.C. Henderson Elementary School.

NC Pre-K seats for four-year-olds are allocated to each county by the NC Pre-K office, based on demonstrated need within the county. Children who are four years old by August 31, 2018 may apply. NC Pre-K seats provide free enrollment in pre-kindergarten from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each weekday.

The new seats were recently assigned by the local NC Pre-K committee to address need at the two locations. Anna Galloway, TCS Coordinator for Pre-Kindergarten Programs, said several families have applied for the slots, and those applications helped to demonstrate the need.

"Now is a great time for families to apply for NC Pre-K slots at SmartStart," said Galloway. "When a child qualifies, we are notified about their status and can place them when seats are available. In some cases, a qualifying child may be approved the same day as their application."

Parents may apply with SmartStart of Transylvania County in the Hollingsworth Building at 147 E. Main Street, Suite 302. This is the building where Quotations is located, and SmartStart is on the second floor in the rear of the building.

The free "NC Pre-K day" program extends 6.5 hours, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., the amount covered by state funds. An additional two hours of "wraparound" service is available until 4:30 p.m. for $120 per month. Full-pay pre-kindergarten from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day costs $600 per child.

In the fall and the spring, a limited number of additional seats may become available at one or more sites. Galloway said a number of families who applied in the spring will now find a free seat at Rosman or T.C. Henderson. If more seats become available from state offices, the number of applications on file at SmartStart may help demonstrate the need for Transylvania County.
