Local Student Musicians Shine At All-District, All-State Auditions
Local Student Musicians Shine At District, State Level
After the hustle and bustle of marching band and holiday concerts, student musicians shift to preparing for All-District auditions. Each one hopes to earn a chance to compete for one of the All-State Bands, and many local students will be performing this May due to their success.
The following Brevard and Rosman Middle School band students participated in the Western District Band auditions at Tuscola High School on the weekend of January 19 and earned positions in the 2019 Western District Bands. Students with an asterisk (*) also scored well enough to qualify for All-State auditions.
Middle School Symphonic Band: Meredith Hart–3rd chair* clarinet, Jessie Dodson–4th chair* clarinet, Ella Leatherwood–6th chair* clarinet), Grace Gentle–1st chair* bass clarinet, Val Butler–1st chair* contrabass clarinet, Brayden Grosvenor–6th chair trombone, and Trevor Long–5th chair tuba.
Middle School Concert Band: Leanne Littleton–1st chair flute, Elijah Chapman (Rosman Middle)–1st chair tenor sax, Matthew Hogsed–2nd chair alto sax, Julia Bohn–4th chair trumpet, and Ben Weaver–6th chair trumpet.
Hundreds of students from 15 Western North Carolina counties competed for positions in the two middle school bands based on three criteria—scales/rudiments, prepared solo, and sightreading. Top scorers placed in Symphonic Band, next highest in Concert Band.
They traveled to Western North Carolina University on February 8 and 9 to rehearse and perform a concert for a public audience on Saturday, February 9, in the Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center.
Congratulations to Meredith Hart, Jessie Dodson, Ella Leatherwood, Grace Gentle, and Val Butler for advancing to All-State Auditions on March 2nd at Central Davidson Middle School (Lexington, NC). Special congratulations to Ella Leatherwood, Meredith Hart, and Val Butler for earning positions in the 2019 North Carolina All-State Band.
Out of 16 counties in Western North Carolina, only 5 other middle schools are sending students to All-State and only one (Cane Creek Middle) is sending more students than Brevard MIddle.
All-State students will travel to UNC-Chapel Hill on May 3-5 to rehearse with their fellow band members and play a concert on Sunday May 5, at 1:00 p.m. in the Aycock Auditorium. Band Directors Donnie Mulligan and Katerina Canter, and private instructor Karen Cole, are extremely proud of all their students’ hard work and accomplishments.
Also on Friday and Saturday, February 8-9, the following Brevard High School students participated in the All-District Honors Band Clinic at Western Carolina University—High School 9/10 Honors Band: Clare Kennerly–6th chair* clarinet, Frank Parsons–8th chair clarinet, Anna Reed–2nd chair* flute, Charlie Stewart–2nd chair* alto saxophone, Joe Smith–1st chair* baritone saxophone, and Rebecca Milligan–3rd chair* trumpet; Senior High 11/12 Honors Band: Elise Poché–5th chair* clarinet, John Nguyen–2nd chair* bass clarinet, Sara Megown–2nd chair* clarinet.
Of these, four qualified for the senior All-State Honors Bands with a clinic and performance also hosted May 3-5 at UNC Chapel Hill— Rebecca Milligan–8th chair trumpet, Elise Poché–10th chair clarinet, Sara Megown–12th chair clarinet, and John Nguyen–1st chair bass clarinet.
In both the middle and high school bands, a handful of musicians in each region may audition for a single All-State chair in some instruments. In other cases, hundreds might be vying for only 20 highly contested seats at the state level.
These accomplished students have all practiced and performed at an incredibly high level throughout the school year, and they deserve hearty congratulations!
