Missy Ellenberger Named Director Of Curriculum & Instruction

Missy Ellenberger Named Director of Curriculum & Instruction, Transylvania County Schools Superintendent Dr. Jeff McDaris has named Missy Ellenberger as Director of Curriculum and Instruction for Transylvania County Schools, serving kindergarten through twelfth grade, effective July 1, 2019. Her appointment was approved by the Board of Education at their regular meeting on April 8.

Ellenberger has been a teacher, coach, career development coordinator, and assistant principal in elementary, middle, and high schools, having served in Transylvania County Schools for 25 years overall.

A graduate of Brevard High School in 1990, Ellenberger earned a bachelor of science in marketing in 1994 from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and served briefly as assistant career development coordinator for Rosman High School that fall. Earning her certification in marketing and business, she taught at Brevard High School from 1995 through 2007, then served as career development coordinator across the district for three years.

In 2006, Ellenberger became a National Board Certified Teacher. Adding certification in health and physical education, she resumed teaching at Brevard Middle School in 2010, then returned to the CTE wing at Brevard High and taught marketing for three more years.

With a master of school administration from Grand Canyon University and administration add-on from Western Carolina University, Ellenberger was named assistant principal at Brevard High School in 2014. Hoping to gain more elementary experience, she spent two years as assistant principal at Pisgah Forest Elementary, before returning as assistant principal to Brevard High in the summer of 2018.

As superintendent, and formerly as director of career and technical education, McDaris has worked with his new curriculum director for over 20 years, and appreciates how she has evolved in preparation for this role.

“I have had the pleasure and privilege of seeing Missy Ellenberger work in her marketing classroom at Brevard High since 1998, and more recently as an administrator,” he explained. “From the beginning, I have been impressed by how she interacts with students and offers a wide array of learning experiences to challenge students in her classes, and across the curriculum.”

McDaris added that Ellenberger has continued that initiative to expand opportunities for students at every level from elementary through high school. “I am excited that Missy will provide great leadership and continuity for teachers and administrators, to support the vertical alignment of our curriculum and a clear pathway for every student from kindergarten through twelfth grade.”

In her new role, Ellenberger is eagerly embracing the opportunity to once more work with elementary and middle school students and their teachers.

"I've come full circle,” she said. “I will be able to serve students and teachers at all levels across our district. I will certainly miss interacting with my students on a daily basis, but I am excited beyond belief about this new opportunity. There is no other district I would rather work for than Transylvania County Schools, where I've been blessed to work at all levels, helping me grow personally and professionally."

Missy Ellenberger is married to Officer Mark Ellenberger, Transylvania County Sheriff’s Deputy and School Resource Officer appointed for Brevard High. They have two sons who attend or have attended Brevard High School—Tanner, now a sophomore at Appalachian State University, and Luke, a Blue Devil senior who will attend Coastal Carolina University this fall.
