We are excited to announce that Transylvania County Schools has been awarded a $62 million needs-based construction grant from NCDPI to enhance learning opportunities and facilities for Brevard High School and Davidson River School.
The grant will support the proposed relocation of Davidson River School to the Brevard High School campus while constructing a new 70,000+ square foot CTE facility that benefits both schools. This move represents a meaningful step forward in expanding opportunities for our students while preserving everything that make DRS and BHS exceptional.
This strategic consolidation moves 56 students from an isolated 1945 building to a separate facility on the main BHS campus, where they will maintain their separate school identity while gaining access to comprehensive programming that was previously not available to these students. It will allow BHS to replace outdated 1959 classrooms and the 1974 CTE wing with a modern facility featuring eleven career pathways and industry-standard equipment. Together, these improvements eliminate educational isolation and provide all 866 high school students with cutting-edge workforce preparation. It creates a regional workforce development center serving 3,085+ students district-wide while addressing Western North Carolina's critical skilled worker shortages.
Teachers, administrators and support staff at Davidson River School are deeply committed to their students. They deliver high-quality instruction, build meaningful relationships, and guide students toward a successful future. That commitment will remain unchanged. We thank these educators, and those serving Brevard High School, for their continued dedication.
We are also grateful to Transylvania County and the school board for supporting this project.
“This funding is critical to support, sustain, and nurture continued excellence in North Carolina’s public schools,” State Superintendent Mo Green said in a statement announcing grants awarded across North Carolina.
The Needs‐Based Public School Capital Fund was established to assist counties with their critical public school building capital needs. Grants from the NBPSCF are funded with revenue from the NC Education Lottery. Grant funds are available to eligible counties for construction of new school buildings and additions, repairs, and renovations of existing school facilities.
