School nutrition staff at Pisgah Forest Elementary School were surprised by cheers and applause from a cafeteria full of young students on Friday.
The School Nutrition Department has been awarded the Superior Site Summer Nutrition Champion Award for its Home Delivery Service offered at Pisgah Forest Elementary during summer 2025.
On Friday, Transylvania County Schools Child Nutrition Director Janette Broda, Greg Cochran and PFE Principal Amanda Lewis surprised them with a banner presentation to celebrate this achievement.
“We expanded our Home Delivery service this past summer to provide county-wide support for families who were unable to reach other summer meal pick-up sites," Broda said. "Our team delivered uninterrupted service, bringing hot meals directly to children from the first day of summer break through the last, including the week of July 4th, when operations have historically paused."
This award was presented by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) and the Carolina Hunger Initiative.
"We served an average of 135 children each day, right at their homes. This program effectively closed the nutritional gap for our students during this extended break," Broda said.
