Members of the BHS InterACT Club partnered with Dr. Rik Emaus and Pisgah Forest Rotary on Monday morning to package Thanksgiving meals for families in need as part of Operation Turkey Drop, a community initiative providing holiday dinners to over 100 local families.
Students assembled 80 meal ingredient bags during their club time in the BHS Cafeteria on Monday.
Dr. Emaus, who leads Operation Turkey Drop, coordinated the project with support from a grant from Pisgah Forest Rotary and an additional $2,500 in donations. Aldi provided special pricing on Thanksgiving ingredients, which were transported to Brevard High School over the weekend.
The initiative will serve 102 families total across the county. In addition to the 80 meal bags assembled by InterACT students, Buchanan Construction Company provided 22 prepared meals. Each package included all the fixings for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, along with a gift card allowing families to purchase their choice of turkey or meat.
Rotarians transported the packaged meals to all nine Transylvania County Schools and Brevard Academy on Monday afternoon. TCS social workers and counselors coordinated with families for distribution.
"Over 100 families will have access to a full Thanksgiving dinner and know their community cares," organizers stated.
The project brought together multiple community partners, including Pisgah Forest Rotary, Pisgah Labs, Transylvania County Schools, Brevard Academy, BHS InterACT Club, TC STRONG, and Buchanan Construction Company, to address immediate food insecurity needs during the holiday season.
