Transylvania County Schools celebrated hands-on learning Monday as students, teachers, parents and community partners came out for the 2026 TCS STEAM Expo at the Transylvania County Recreation Department.

The event showcased the science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) education happening across the school district, giving the community a look at education and student work in action.

"A meaningful part of the expo was watching students take on the role of teacher. Young students walked community members through their projects, explained their findings and answered questions," a Transylvania County Schools official said. " It's an experience that deepens understanding."

Attendees saw a range of student work. Robots were built and programmed to simulate space shuttles and planetary orbits, drones were flown, scientific hypotheses were tested, and artwork rooted in mathematical concepts and photography technology filled the room. Dioramas built by dedicated students brought complex ideas about space and photosynthesis to life alongside hands-on exhibits and demonstrations.

"The student work, led by these awesome teachers, highlights some of the critical thinking and problem-solving skills students develop in TCS classrooms," a school official added.

The event was supported by community partners GEAR UP and Blue Ridge Community College, both of whom have invested in expanding STEAM and career and technical education opportunities for students in Transylvania County Schools.

"We are grateful for everyone who made this year's TCS STEAM Expo a day that shined a light on the amazing student work happening right here in our schools," organizers said.
