What an incredible day! So many proud parents and families came out to celebrate their 5th graders as they complete this important milestone and prepare for the next step in their journey...middle school!
Beginning with the 2025–2026 school year, Transylvania County Schools and the Transylvania County Sheriff's Department introduced the SHIELD Program for all 5th grade students. Taught by our amazing School Resource Officers, SHIELD is a new, updated initiative that equips students with age-appropriate lessons and practical tools to help them make safe, healthy choices.
The SHIELD Program focuses on key areas that impact today's youth:
🚫 Drug Prevention
🧍 Stranger Safety
💻 Internet Safety
🤝 Peer Mentoring
💪 Bullying Prevention
This program is strengthening the partnership between our schools, families, and community. These students have shown just how ready they are to tackle the next chapter!
Remember...Once a ranger, always a ranger!

Yesterday wrapped up the final meeting of Disc-O Club at Brevard Elementary School and what an amazing spring it has been! This afterschool program, started and led by EC teacher Heather Layton, taught students the skills of throwing and catching discs and introduced them to two fantastic sports: Disc Golf and Ultimate Frisbee.
One of the highlights from the semester was a field trip to the Brevard College Disc Golf Course earlier this month, a memorable experience for all involved!
A huge thank you to Mrs. Layton and BHS NHS volunteers Averie McCall and Nisha Mooney, who showed up every Tuesday to help make this club a success. Your dedication made a real difference!
This photo is from our very first session. Look how far we've come! We can't wait to see Disc-O Club spin back around next year!

Friday through Monday brought a whopping 5.46 inches of rain to BES!
Brevard Elementary's 5th graders read the rain gauge to the nearest 100th of an inch and entered their data into the CoCoRaHS system — a national network where real scientists use community-collected rainfall data for research and weather forecasting.
Transylvania County Schools is proud of these young scientists!

Do you have a rising kindergartener? Reserve your child’s spot today and get ready for an exciting year of learning, growth, and fun at BES! 🍎📚✏️
📌 Items Needed for Enrollment:

What an incredible night at Rosman Middle School!
Last night's Academic Showcase was a celebration of all the amazing work our Tigers have put in throughout the year. Families and community members got to see displays showcasing student learning from the year, including art, math, science and literacy projects. Eighth grade students did a great job presenting their Democracy Project presentations on the theme "Young Americans: Your Voice Counts, How Do You Participate in Your Democracy?" There was also a special musical performance from students in Mr. McCanless' class.
Dinner was also provided free of charge, courtesy of GearUp NC Appalachian Partnership.
A huge thank you to our dedicated teachers and staff who made the evening possible, and to the parents and families who came out to cheer on their students.
We are so proud of the creativity, critical thinking, and civic passion our Rosman Middle School students continue to demonstrate. These young people are proof that you are never too young to make a difference.

At last night’s Board of Education meeting, BHS teacher Andrew Healy shared highlights and reflections from the most recent trip abroad, giving the community a look at the meaningful experiences students gain through cultural exchange and travel. Mrs. Taylor, who also accompanied students on the trip, attended the board meeting as well. These excellent teachers, as well as the student who spoke about his experience in Denmark, were recognized by the board and Superintendent Dr. Lisa Fletcher.
One photo in Mr. Healy's presentation showed BHS students giving a presentation about Brevard to their peers in Denmark!
Programs like this help students build global awareness, develop lifelong connections, and see the world from new perspectives. Thank you to Mr. Healy and Mrs. Taylor for leading this longstanding opportunity for BHS students and for sharing the impact of the program with our community.

As we enjoy the long weekend, we take time to honor and remember those who gave their lives in service to our country. We hope our students, staff, and families have a safe and meaningful weekend.

We experienced technical difficulties during a portion of the livestream for the Transylvania County Board of Education Meeting for May 18, 2026. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to repair the stream and make the full recording publicly available.

Summer is right around the corner, and Transylvania County Schools Department of School Nutrition will offer free summer meals! All children 18 years and younger are eligible. We will offer three ways to access summer meals. These are outlined on the flyer below. Registration is required for our "Groceries to Go" and Home Delivery programs. 🚌 Our TCS Transportation Department team, along with our amazing bus drivers, gathered for the 2026 Transportation Banquet this week!
A huge thank you to Pescados and Sunrise for hosting the event. It was a wonderful celebration of the dedicated people who keep our students safe every single day. We are so grateful for each and every one of you!

We are proud to share that Breanna Morris, art teacher at Rosman Elementary School, has been selected as a 2026–27 Kenan Fellow through the Kenan Fellows Program for Teacher Leadership at NC State University! She is one of only 36 educators chosen across North Carolina and Virginia.
Breanna will partner with The Science House at NC State on her fellowship project, Strengthening the STEM Pipeline, bringing cutting-edge STEM connections back to her students right here in Rosman. As part of the fellowship, she'll spend at least three weeks this summer immersed in hands-on workforce experience, all while continuing to teach.
She'll also join a statewide network of over 680 fellow educators.
Transylvania County Schools is cheering you on every step of the way!

Last night, the community celebrated the incredible talent of student artists from across Transylvania County, spanning multiple grades and schools, as their work took center stage at the Transylvania Arts Council Gallery.
If you missed the reception, there is still time to see these amazing pieces! The exhibit runs through Saturday, May 16, so stop by and show your support for our young artists.

Next up is the GEAR UP High School Engineering Bootcamp, a summer internship where students work side by side with real engineers on capstone-style projects, building mentorship, technical skills, and career readiness.
A huge thank you everyone who made this possible: GEAR UP ASU, WCU College of Engineering and Technology, the WCU Rapid Center, and MCJROTC
