Between preparing delicious food, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies, and offering service with a smile, Transylvania County Schools nutrition professionals have a lot on their plate. To celebrate their hard work and commitment, TCS will celebrate School Lunch Hero Day on May 1.
This day, celebrated annually since 2013, was designated by The School Nutrition Association and Jarrett Krosoczka, author of the “Lunch Lady” graphic novel series. School Lunch Hero Day provides an opportunity for parents, students, school staff and communities to thank those who provide healthy meals to nearly 30 million of America’s students each school day.
All across the school district, school nutrition professionals will be honored and recognized by students, school staff, parents, and the community.
“School nutrition employees must balance many roles and follow numerous federal, state and local regulations to ensure safe and healthy meals are available in schools. School Lunch Hero Day provides the opportunity for the community to thank these hardworking heroes for their dedication to fueling our students for success,” said School Nutrition Director Janette Broda.
Federal nutrition standards ensure that school cafeterias always offer low-fat or fat-free milk, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein. School meals also meet limits on calories, sodium and unhealthy fats. The importance and nutritional value of school meals are well documented. For many children, school lunch is the most important and nutrient-rich meal of their day.
In Transylvania County Schools, we are proud to offer free meals to every student in the district, and to work with our community partners, like TCSEF to bring meals to families during school breaks, ensuring no student goes hungry.

Rosman Middle School students are working with professional artist Billy Smith, of the Transylvania Community Arts Council, to create an inspiring mural near the cafeteria!
This awesome Tiger mural design was created by students, and RMS teachers helped decide which student design would be displayed on the wall for years to come.

TCS CTE is proud to announce that Olivia Patrie was awarded an apprenticeship through Blue Ridge Community College to Rice Custom Cabinetry. Olivia has completed the interior design and welding pathways through BHS CTE, preparing her for this opportunity. The apprenticeship program allows apprentices to work under the guidance of experienced professionals while taking college courses that directly apply to their work. They receive wages that increase with their skill level, a tuition-free education and a rewarding career path. Way to go, Olivia!

Reminder | All Transylvania County Schools resumed regular bell schedules and pick-up times today, April 27.
The Connestee Falls Student Scholarship Program graciously gave $153,000 to TCS students this year to help them further their educational journey. CFSSP works with generous community members to raise funds for these scholarship opportunities annually. This year, the group raised more than it ever has before, making it extra exciting for our scholars. We greatly appreciate this partnership and the opportunities it gives students!
TCS K-8 teachers participated in a 3 hour math training by Ms. Meredith Stanley this week to gain strategies in number sense and fluency.
This PD series will continue through the 26-27 school year and will include opportunities to see fellow colleagues implementing new ideas in their own classrooms!

RHS Sophomores Partner with Rosman Elementary Readers
Sophomores from Mrs. Cook’s classroom at RHS recently had the opportunity to visit Rosman Elementary School to read with Mrs. Hokans’ students. During the visit, high school students paired up with younger readers to share stories, build connections, and encourage a love of reading.
This special partnership began a few years ago and has continued to be a meaningful experience for both schools. For the elementary students, it is a chance to read alongside older students they can look up to. For the sophomores, it is an opportunity to serve as positive role models, practice leadership, and give back to the school community.
Mrs. Cook’s students enjoyed spending time with Mrs. Hokans’ class and seeing the excitement that reading together can bring. Moments like these remind us that learning does not just happen inside one classroom; it grows through connection, encouragement and community.

Please note the following schedule change. As you may know, an additional 10 minutes was added to the school day earlier this year to ensure our district met the state's required in-person instructional time after disruptions caused by inclement weather. It had also been planned as a precaution for next school year to help avoid the need for an extended school year, spring break adjustments, or Saturday school should inclement weather hit our area again.
After thoughtfully listening to feedback from our community and carefully reviewing survey responses from more than 200 teachers across the district, the Board of Education voted this week to remove the additional 10 minutes for the remainder of this school year and to hold off on adding it for next school year as well.
We are so grateful to everyone who took the time to share their thoughts. Your voices matter, and this decision reflects our district's commitment to listening to the families and educators who make up this community.
With the threat of winter weather well behind us for this school year, we are happy to return to regular bell schedules. Regular schedules will resume on Monday, April 27, and we are working with our teams now to make that happen as smoothly as possible.
We look forward to finishing this school year strong together, and we will continue to work collaboratively on planning for next year. Thank you for your partnership and your continued support of Transylvania County Schools.

In second grade, North Carolina’s science curriculum emphasizes a thorough understanding of animal life cycles. To help further this understanding, Transylvania County 4-H partnered with Mrs. Reader's class at Pisgah Forest Elementary School to conduct hands-on learning as students observe the development and lifecycle of real chicken eggs. This week, they had their first "candling" to discover what is happening inside the eggs at this incubation stage!
Transylvania County Schools is incredibly grateful for our ongoing partnership with the Connestee Falls Scholarship Support Program.
This year, the CFSSP has raised over $150,000 to help our students manage the financial cost of furthering their education. This incredible support is making a real difference in the lives of our students and their futures.

Mrs. Zachary received a creative classroom grant from the Transylvania County Schools Education Foundation, so her class was able to bring PocketLab G-Force Cars into the classroom for a unique, hands-on physics lesson. Her 7th graders at RMS are diving into forces, motion, and energy by simulating ways to reduce the impact of car collisions, complete with real-time data on velocity, g-force, acceleration, and more. Students are now collecting and analyzing the same kind of data used by real crash safety researchers.
Transylvania County MCJROTC came in second as a team at the Leatherneck Challenge in Tennessee, and Cadet Private Wood came in 1st in the half mile! Eight schools and 12 different teams competed in this event.
This special middle school event is packed with hands-on, interactive activities, demonstrations & displays, and STEAM-related giveaways!

April is National Poetry Month and it's time for the Mary C. Jenkins Community and Cultural Center Board's county-wide poetry contest!
This contest is open to all residents of all ages, and encourages everyone to express themselves by to writing a poem. The theme this year is Freedom.
Poems are accepted through April 30th and are judged by age group, with cash awards to the winners.

These adventurous Brevard High School students are flying to Denmark this morning for an unforgettable and unique learning experience with Mr. Healy and Mrs. Taylor. Along the way, they'll get to reunite with the students from Denmark who came to BHS earlier this year. Happy travels!
